GolfingTips.net Address Take your grip with the left hand (right handed players) and place the clubface behind the ball and take a look at your target. Carefully line up the bottom edge of the clubface to be perpendicular to the line of flight. Then assume the full grip. For woods and long irons, position the feet approximately shoulder width apart. There is here a compromise. The feet will be far enough apart to form a solid base and allow a pronounced weight transfer. On the other hand their position must allow for a comfortable full turn back. Using the driver, the ball is opposite the left heel. For other clubs it is proportionally back towards center. Generally the heels should be on a line to the hole. Some feel more comfortable with a slightly open stance. For shorter range clubs the stance may be narrowed appropriately with the the stance opening some more. The knees are slightly flexed and relaxed. The back is relatively straight and the arms hang naturally from the shoulders. The left shoulder is higher than the right. The left arm is very firm. The stance is balanced, athletic and loose. Don't lower the chin; this will restrict your turn. After all this the angle of the spine is set, the basis for correct hip and shoulder rotation. The shaft of the club will also be set correctly. The shaft and the extended left arm should be roughly in a line, when viewed from the front.
