 Putting
Putting style is a very personal issue. There are a few generally observed
rules:
- Settle in to a solid stance. The legs, waist and hips will not move.
- Head is kept still with eyes directly over the ball.
- Use the forward press. Swing from the turning shoulders.
- Keep left wrist firm to keep putter head on line.
- Maintain a feel for the clubhead location with the fingers. This provides
"touch" for longer putts.
- Swing the clubhead in an unhurried pendulum style.
- Rap the ball crisply at the nadir of the return swing and follow through
smoothly towards the hole.
- In reading the line, the most important part to examine is the last
few feet just before the hole.
- Aim for a spot a foot or so beyond the hole, so that the ball will
maintain its line at the end of its run.
Other comments:
- Weight is about equal on each foot, otionally more on the left.
- In taking the stance, position the ball somewhat left of center, so
that each arm feels comfortable without reaching. Adopt a solid position
with feet a little farther apart than shoulder width.
- Take a moment for complete relaxation before the forward press. Take
a deep breath.
- Without being rigid, keep the arms and wrists somewhat stiff as a
unit during the swing.
- Get the feeling of being behind the ball as it is struck,
- During the follow-through imagine that your right hand is in the position
of casting the ball on the line to the hole.
