Shot Plan

A reminder list of some things to think about before going into the pre-shot Routine. Do as much of this as possible while approaching your ball or while others are hitting:

  • Establish the yardage for the shot.
  • Ascertain the point from which you want to play the following shot.
  • Check out for traps, water, heavy rough, out of bounds in that area.
  • Consider wind direction and velocity.
  • Adjust for terrain slopes and elevations, particularly through the green.
  • Calculate where the ball will go after the first bounce, especially around the green.
  • Pick a target; allow a margin for your most likely deviation error.
  • Select the club and decide on the clubhead speed. Take enough club.
  • Visualize the planned trajectory of the shot, particularly the altitude.

If in trouble:

  • Consider the alternate shots you could play.
  • Calculate the percentages.
  • Play conservatively to reach green or fairway without fail.
  • Plan to make up the lost stroke on the next shot.
